Outdoor LED Retrofit at Apartment Complexes

Case Study:

Outdoor LED Retrofit at Apartment Complexes

Valley, AL

Background

Valley, Alabama, is located on the border with Georgia along the I-85 corridor, within driving distance of Atlanta, Montgomery, and Birmingham.

Among its many advantages as a place to live, work, and play, Valley includes these two upscale apartment complexes owned by the same group.

lighting cost savings

Challenge

Both of these Valley apartment complexes are very well-maintained.

The parking lot lighting, however, was lacking.

The complexes' 150W high-pressure sodium lighting technology was inadequate. As you can see in the Before photos below, the old lighting left many dark, shadowy spots that are perceived as unsafe.

The owners of the apartment complexes had a specific budget in mind when they decided they needed to upgrade the parking lots’ post-top lighting and increase the quality of the light, both in terms of uniformity and color.

Solution

This project was a one-to-one changeout using existing poles. 38 fixtures were needed at the smaller complex and 126 were needed at the larger one.

The apartment complex owners connected with Nathan Connell, Senior Market Specialist at Alabama Power.

Nathan worked closely with the owners to understand the project requirements. A few different solutions were considered, but Nathan and the owners agreed the perfect solution was the 71W ULA LED Acorn from the Streetworks brand at Cooper Lighting Solutions.

This Utility LED Acorn offers superior performance in an attractive, traditional design that’s easy to service -- and it allowed Nathan to meet the owner’s price point without sacrificing quality or lighting design..

Results

The Before & After photos practically speak for themselves!

Let’s look at the details:

  • Enhanced Visual Acuity The new 4000K lighting makes it easier for pedestrians and drivers to see at night.
  • 50% Decrease in Power Consumption LEDs use much less energy than traditional HID lighting.
  • Using Less Power Translates Into Lower Lighting Costs And it’s less of a strain on the environment, an important consideration as more and more energy-conserving mandates are appearing.
  • The New Lights Appear Brighter The appearance of higher illumination for less wattage is the result of the better light quality and uniformity emitted by the ULA LED Acorns. Remember, the new lights are only 71W while the old lights were 150W – and this was a one-to-one changeout.
  • Reduction in Maintenance Another benefit of LED lighting is its longevity. LEDs need to be changed much less often than traditional lights.
  • Improved Safety and Security Uniform nighttime lighting, with no shadowy corners, makes residents feel safer and helps deter vandals and other bad actors.
